Tyler will miss the start of UH’s camp!

August 2, 2008

About not getting to participate in camp, Tyler said:
“I’m working on this.” (HA)

About Tyler being held out of camp, Mack said in a press release:
“Tyler has things he has to work on. At this point, he will not practice with the team. Because of privacy laws, I can’t comment any further.” (HSB)

HA Note: “McMackin emphasized that Graunke is not suspended, and that he will be allowed to rejoin the team when his situation is resolved. Citing privacy laws, McMackin declined to give specific details about Graunke’s situation.”

HA Note: “Graunke, who was expected to be Brennan’s successor, violated an undisclosed team policy earlier this year and was suspended for a month. He was reinstated in time for spring training.”

About how the other QB candidates will be competing for the starting spot in camp, Tyler said:
“I can’t afford to miss time.” (HA)

HA Note: “Shane Austin, a second-year freshman, and fifth-year senior Jake Santos also are on the training-camp roster. But they are expected to work mostly with the scout-team offense this week.”

UH moving into the dance studios again for camp

August 2, 2008

About how he’s prepared for the dance studios this year, Adam Leonard said:
“Thankfully I got an air mattress this year because I definitely haven’t been comfortable sleeping on the fold-out beds.” (HA)

HSB Note: “The influx of players begins today when freshmen and transfers report for camp. The veterans join them tomorrow with the first of 29 practices leading up to the opener at Florida set for 10 a.m. Monday.”

About how he decided they should stay with the dance studios instead of the dorms after talking with the team’s vets, Mack said:
“We could have gone into the dorms, but really the seniors are the ones who really wanted to stay together to get to know the new players. It’s a good bonding experience.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “The team is split into two studios, one for seniors and freshman with sophomores and juniors in the other.”

About why the vets like staying at the dance studios for camp, Keao Monteilh said:
“You get to interact with everybody. Everybody’s in one big room, you don’t have to go door to door to get to know some of the guys. You get less privacy and you hear people snore. We always try to pick out who’s the loudest snorers.” (HSB)

About staying together at the dance studios, Adam Leonard said:
“You get to see more people’s personalities and see how they are. I think it’s real good for the new guys to get the personality of the team.” (HSB)

About how they will have limited free time during camp except for Sunday, Monteilh talked about his Sunday plans:
“I’ll go to church, spend time with my family and be back by curfew.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “The team will practice once per day next week and have six sets of two-a-days scheduled, the first on Aug. 11. McMackin said he plans on holding one scrimmage during camp. Offensive lineman Kainoa LaCount and defensive back Chris Black, both junior college transfers, are finishing summer courses and are expected to report later in the week.”

About the rankings of Florida and other opponents, Adam Leonard said:
“It doesn’t really matter to me, .I’m just ready to go out and play against anybody.” (HSB)

JJ will pay UH an estimated $200k

August 2, 2008

About how a settlement with JJ is close to being completed, Carolyn Tanaka, UH associate VP for external affairs and university relations, said:
“We’re hopeful that a settlement will be reached in the near future. When and if a settlement is reached, the university believes that it should be made public, as state law requires.” (HA)

HA Note: “Former University of Hawai’i football coach June Jones is expected to pay the school approximately $200,000 to settle a five-month-old dispute resulting from his departure to Southern Methodist University.”

HA Note: “Speculation has been that Jones wanted the money to be earmarked for the athletic department or the football program. That may be among the details to be resolved.”
