Other UH Notes

February 13, 2008

About how they are ahead of last year’s pace with season ticket sales, McNamara said:
“We’ve got a good start on that.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “Last year, after Colt Brennan announced he’d return for his senior season, UH started a deposit program that generated 2,143 new sales before the renewal campaign. So far this year, more than 2,200 tickets have been requested, with 738 individuals putting down deposits of $50 each, associate athletic director John McNamara said. Season-ticket sales for 2007 totaled 22,975, an increase of 4,760 from the previous year. UH announced a goal of 30,000 for 2008.”

About how current TV and radio holders are being given first crack at negotiations, McNamara said:
“(KFVE general manager) John Fink has assured us a proposal by the end of the month. And we already have an extension proposal from 1420. We’ll be meeting with them.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “If agreements aren’t reached for extensions, the contracts go out to bid. That was the case last year for the TV rights, but in the process, KHNL/KFVE more than doubled the previous annual rights fee of $700,000. That held off Oceanic Time Warner’s attempt to wrest the contract held by KHNL/KFVE the previous 22 years. Including pay-per-view money, UH made $2.5 million of its TV contract last year, McNamara said. Over the three-year course of the radio contract, the school made around $1 million. Both current contracts end July 31.”

About how they expect to be under budget for its Sugar Bowl expenses, Clapp said:
“Our goal was to keep our expenses under $2 million. We have an estimate we’re still in that area. I think we did a good job of preparing for this game and knowing what we’d be facing and administering the process.” (HSB)

About how he has met with Chancellor Hinshaw to discuss how the bowl payout will be spent, Clapp said:
“We have reached no conclusions. But I’ll tell you the chancellor has been unbelievable in her support in the things we need to be competitive. So I have no concerns. At some time we’ll come up with what’s exactly right to spend that money on.” (HSB)

AD application update

February 13, 2008

About how he applied for the AD position on Monday, Clapp said:
“I’m always interested in leadership opportunities in intercollegiate athletics and I’m particularly interested in this one. I think it’s a terrific place to be. Great people. A wonderful, wonderful opportunity. That being said I continue to be excited to serve UH in whatever role the chancellor and others want me involved.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “Two sources said UH associate athletic director Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano had applied. She did not return a call yesterday.”

About how he has not applied yet, Hilo Community College chancellor (and former UH associate AD) Rockne Freitas said:
“I’m still thinking about it. I honestly haven’t decided yet.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “Others sang similar tunes yesterday, including Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya, Hawaii Bowl executive director Jim Donovan and Kamehameha-Hawaii athletic director Bob Wagner. All have expressed at least some interest, but none had applied when contacted yesterday.”

About how he has not applied for the position yet, Bob Wagner said:
“I’m real interested, but I have not officially applied.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “Several other potential candidates have surfaced, including KGMB executive Rick Blangiardi, Aloha Stadium authority board member Marcia Klompus and San Jose State football coach Dick Tomey. UH was to announce a selection committee by the end of the week and hopes to have the job filled in a month.”

Ferd wrote in HA: “It isn’t only UH staffers and media onlookers who felt the process wasn’t all it could — or should — have been. Some of the people who served on the so-called selection committee in 2002 will tell you they felt misled and kept in the dark by the way it played out. So much so that when the announcement was made they claimed to be as surprised as anyone.

They talk about having been window dressing and of votes that were cast but totals never added up or announced in their presence.

“In hindsight it is pretty clear that the hiring of (Herman) Frazier was a done deal from the start when key information was kept from us and candidates with local ties weren’t even given the opportunity to be interviewed,” said one committee member who asked to remain anonymous.

It is not a solo opinion, judging from comments by others who served on the 16-member committee. So much so that as controversy over Frazier’s administration swirled these last two years, you had to point a finger at the process that put him there as much as the man himself.”

Mack talks about playing SMU

February 13, 2008

About how he and JJ have discussed having their teams play each other, Mack said:
“We’d like to get something going with SMU. It would be a natural. I’d love for us to compete against one another as two great programs. June and I have talked about that. We’d both love to do that.” (HA)

HA Note: “McMackin said Texas Tech and Utah are among the schools he is interested in trying to work into the schedule soon. He has coached at both. The earliest UH could play any of them, as schedules currently stand, is 2009 when UH has one opening on its 13-game schedule. Since UH already has six road games that season, it would probably have to be a home game. UH has two openings in 2010, according to interim athletic director Carl Clapp, who met with McMackin for about 30 minutes about scheduling issues. The 2011 schedule is filled, Clapp said.”

About filling the open spots in their schedule in 2009 and 2010, Clapp said:
“We’ve begun to talk about scheduling and look at the next few years and what’s out there and what the options are. I’ve let coach Mack know that as long as I continue in this role, I’d like to collaborate with him. I want his thoughts and will be expecting him to share them as he sees fit.” (HA)

About how the 2012 schedule, with 4 openings now, would be Mack’s first real chance to put his mark on the schedule, Clapp said:
“I told him I would leave ‘12 for him.” (HA)

About wanting a schedule with a difficulty level between the easy 2007 and hard 2008 schedules, Mack said:
“That would be ideal, something between the two.” (HA)

HA Note: “UH hasn’t played SMU since 2002, two years before the Mustangs left the Western Athletic Conference for Conference USA. The Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl had an agreement matching WAC and C-USA teams, but that deal expired. For 2008 and ‘09, the WAC representative will play a Pac-10 team, if available.” (HA)

About how he’d like to play Texas Tech because of their style of offense, Mack said:
“Both schools throw the ball (a lot), so I think it would be a fun game.” (HA)
