Warrior Insider talks with Koreye Dixon

September 21, 2007

WI Note: “Warrior fanz are hoping that the football talent found at Lakewood will flow to Manoa. This summer three highly touted members of the Lakes HS football team attended the Rich Miano Football Camp at Manoa–Cavin Schmidtke QB, Jermaine Kearse WR, and Koreye Dixon WR. Kavario Middleton was scheduled to attend but a prior commitment to an AAU basketball function caused him to cancel.”

Asked how his season was going so far, Dixon said:
“so far we’re currently the number 1 team in the state and we’re 3-0. We look pretty good but there’s room for improvement.” (WI)

Asked what schools are recruiting him the most and if he has set up any visits yet, Dixon said:
“Right now it’s pretty much the local schools who are recruiting me the hardest. Eastern Washington, Washington State, Washington, Oregon State, and Oregon. I don’t really have a favorite but Eastern is the only to offer me.” (WI)

Asked how the UH camp went, Dixon said:
“Oh, the camp was great, and I love Hawaii. The weather was great, always things to do there and i met a lot of people. As far as the camp went…it was pretty good i got to work with a lot of other players and coaches. I had a groin injury that kind-a-slowed me down but overall it was a good experience.” (WI)

Asked how his relationship with their new QB (Calvin Schmidtke), Dixon said:
“His chemistry with the team is really good. He fit right in with the team and we’re good friends now. He knows how to be serious when we need to but away from football he’s a jokester.” (WI)

Asked if it was hard to get noticed by schools because he’s surrounded by players like Kearse and Middleton, which makes him underrated, Dixon said:
“yeah i would agree to that I’m pretty underrated but it isn’t really that hard for me to be noticed, i mean yeah they get alot of the attention but when coaches come to scout them they also come to see the rest of the talent that our team brings and that’s when i take advantage of my opportunities, but don’t get me wrong my team always comes first.” (WI)

Asked for his height, weight, and 40 time, Dixon said:
“5′9″ 165 and i last ran a 4.5 in the 40″ (WI)

Colt still hopes to play

September 21, 2007

Hoping he gets to play vs. CSU, Colt said:
“It feels a lot better every day. If it continues to heal the way it’s been healing, and Saturday I wake up and it feels good and I can go, I’m gonna go. No doubt about that.” (HA)

HA Note: “During yesterday’s practice, Brennan wore shoulder pads, threw lightly on the side, and only handed off in 11-on-11 drills. After consulting with head coach June Jones, Brennan did not throw passes during drills. He pushes off on his right foot when he passes.”

About not throwing in practice yesterday, Colt said:
“It’s healing so well, I didn’t want to aggravate it. By Saturday night, I think it’ll be good enough to play on.” (HA)

JJ said that even if Colt does not practice today:
“as long as it feels OK on game day, I’ll let him play.” (HA)

About how JJ asked him to use a heavily padded medical boot instead of crutches, Colt said:
“I think the boot helps because it makes it easier to move around. At the same time, I’m walking, and that’s good.” (HA)

About Colt wearing the boot, JJ said:
“He’s good enough he can play in that boot.” (HA)

About how he should be able to tell today if he can play tomorrow, Colt said:
“(Today) should be a good indication. Mornings are the hardest part because the ankle’s stiff. But I wanted to get out there and run around. By Saturday night it should be healed up enough (to play).” (HSB)

About how he won’t risk future games for a game vs. a I-AA team that they are favored by 60 points over, Colt said:
“It’s a good point. It all depends on how I feel Saturday. I want to get out there and play some series. But if there’s going to be any negative effect … I’m not shooting it up for this game.” (HSB)

Quotes from CSU

September 21, 2007

CPC = Charleston Post and Courier
HSB = Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Really happy to finally get to play a I-A team, senior LB Jada Ross (CSU’s all-time leading tackler) said:
“Since I’ve been here there has been talk of us getting a chance to play a I-A opponent and for it to finally happen is very exciting for the guys who have been here for a few years. You get to read about the other programs on our level playing the Division I teams and as a player you really want that chance. We’re getting our chance now.” (CPC)

Kicker Nick Ellis said that CSU plans to beat UH:
“We’re going out there to win. I hope people understand that. The trip will be fun, but it’s business. We’re trying to get better as a football team every time we play. Personally, I’m excited to get out there and kick in front of a huge crowd. For all of us that will be playing, this is something we’ve always dreamed of.” (CPC)

Happy with how his team has been focused on the game, CSU coach Mills said:
“Our guys are focused because they know the challenge is formidable. This Hawaii team was the preseason favorite of many to be the Boise State of 2007, and they show up on film as an outstanding football team.

At the same time, every young man who has ever donned the pads dreams of playing college football at the FBS level. Those who don’t achieve that level hope for the chance to compete against a team at the FBS level. This is our one opportunity, the first we’ve had since my first year here. We look forward to competing against one of the top football teams in the country.” (CPC)

CPC Note: “CSU’s program has evolved from an 0-11 laughingstock in Mills’ first season (2003) to a conference championship team. Though off to a 1-2 start this season, the players feel the program continues to build and strengthen. Playing nationally ranked opponents can only enhance the process.”

About how this game will help their exposure and recruiting, senior OL Matt Hoisington said:
“Being here from the beginning with coach Mills, this is a big accomplishment for the program. It’s going to help the recruiting here and help us gain some national exposure. That’s what the program needs to take the next step.” (CPC)

About how they are focused on winning, no matter how big an underdog they are, Hoisington said:
“The one thing we talk about as a program is that we go into every game expecting to win, nothing else is acceptable. We know we’re the underdogs and that’s fine. We wouldn’t schedule this game if we didn’t think we could compete and every player on this team is taking this seriously from a football standpoint. It’s very exciting.” (CPC)

About how he is like many of their players who has never been on an airplane, Ross said:
“I’ve never been on a plane and I’m kind of excited to experience it.” (CPC)

Looking forward to seeing the reaction of their players who have never flown before, Ellie said:
“It’s going to be funny to watch some of these guys faces when they bring that landing gear up. I remember the first time I flew, that really scared me. It’s noisy and uncomfortable to say the least. Flying is different, especially when you are flying for the first time. I’ll be there to help some of these guys handle it but it’s going to be fun to watch.” (CPC)

About how they have to strive to win the game, Mills said:
“Obviously you do your team and your program a disservice if you enter without the goal of winning the contest. We look at this as an opportunity to continue our growth. Our ultimate goal is to win a national championship at the FCS (Division I-AA) level. This gives us a chance to raise the bar.” (HSB)

About how this game will help them the rest of the season, Mills said:
“After this, you’ve leathered yourself, matured as a program.” (HSB)

HSB Note: “This is Charleston Southern’s first game against a ranked Division I opponent, and the Bucs have never beaten a Division I team. The 4,750 miles they covered yesterday is the farthest any Big South team has traveled to play a football game.”

About how unusual this road game is to his team, Mills said:
“Our starting quarterback (sophomore Eli Byrd) has never been on a plane. This is just the second time we’re flying to a game. Many wouldn’t have had an opportunity to visit Hawaii. We want the to experience and grow culturally.” (HSB)

About how memories from a previous road trip to Howard helped him decide to play at UH, Mills said:
“We took the team to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial. So many players said thank you. They had never been to Washington.” (HSB)

Former Pac-5 player Neil Rose played under Mills at Harvard and said:
“He’s one of the key people in my life. An excellent coach and mentor. I got so much from him in the time I spent with him. He’s real principled, intelligent and ethical.” (HSB)

About how Mills has a wide-open playbook, Rose said:
“Really wide-open book in terms of the playbook, complex but not needlessly so. It’s no huddle, two or three plays at one time and the quarterback makes a lot of decisions. It’s a quarterback’s offense in that it puts the quarterback in position to choose the best play.” (HSB)

About how CSU’s leadership said that they needed to increase their national profile, Mills said:
“Playing a nationally-ranked football team with Colt Brennan fits that. Our aspiration is to become the University of Hawaii of the FCS level. We really feel they are the Boise State of this year. Playing against a tremendous team is going to help our growth.” (HSB)

Asked if they can draw inspiration from Appalachian State’s win over Michigan, Mills said:
“Our first response (when the Mountaineers won at Michigan) was one of shock. There’s a distinct disadvantage right off the bat, the 23 scholarship difference. The depth usually comes into play.” (HSB)

Quotes from Adam Leonard

September 21, 2007

About how they blitzed UNLV so many times to disrupt their freshman QB Dixon, GM said:
“We blitzed 30 times. He’s their focal point, so we wanted to confuse him and get him nervous.” (HSB)

About their blitzes, Adam Leonard said:
“We knew if we sit back in a zone he’d pick us apart. So we put some pressure in his face. Come up to the line, come off the edge. We showed something different on almost every play. We switched it up a lot. It’s a different position for me. I’m enjoying it. There’s a lot of different possibilities.” (HSB)

About how he is still not 100% recovered from his offseason knee surgery, Adam said:
“Hopefully by midseason I’ll be back to full speed. Mentally, I’m still not comfortable. There’s certain things where I don’t move as fluidly, I kind of favor my leg. But I’m doing extra work during the week, trying to prepare myself for the game.” (HSB)

Quotes about the tape mess up with CSU

September 21, 2007

About how he sent a replacement scouting tape as soon as he was told by a UH assistant that the original tape was unusable, CSU coach Jay Mills said:
“It was nothing intentional. We’re using a new system and there were some technological glitches.” (HSB)

JJ said that Mills called him about this and:
“he sounds sincere.” (HSB)

Quotes about special teams

September 21, 2007

About how he has learned to value special teams, JoPierre Davis said:
“It was my attitude. After high school, I thought I was a hotshot. After watching Timo (Paepule) and Guyton (Galdeira) I realized I want to be on special teams. Timo is a killer on special teams. He’s ‘Special Timo.’ ” (HA)

About his nickname of ‘Special Timo’, Timo Paepule said:
“They call me that because of my special-teams’ play. Special teams are important, and fun, too. I take a lot of pride in it.” (HA)

HA Note: “Indeed, a line is forming to join one of the six special-team units. In training camp, Korey Reynolds, a freshman from Alabama, decided to move from defensive end to compete for a berth on the kick-return team. As the No. 1 middle-wedge blocker, Reynolds was one of two true freshmen on the travel roster for the Louisiana Tech and Nevada-Las Vegas games.

Running back Mario Cox recently earned a starting job on the kick-return team. Because of his special-team value, Cox beat out running back Jason Laumuli for a berth on the last travel roster.”

About wanting to play on special teams, Mario Cox (who also wants to play on the kickoff team) said:
“Once you see a couple of guys motivated and doing good on special teams, it motivates you, too.” (HA)

HA Note: “When Jones was hired in December 1998, one of his first acts was to sign Dennis McKnight as the special-team coach. Mc-Knight printed “Special Forces” T-shirts that he distributed to his players. McKnight left UH after the 2000 season, but returned last year. Although McKnight no longer distributes T-shirts, his emphasis remains.”

About the emphasis that McKnight puts on special teams, Galdeira said:
“Coach McKnight said the kickoff and kick return are the first offensive and defensive plays of the game. It sets field position. It’s important.” (HA)

About how they start and end every practice with special-team drills, Galdeira said:
“It’s a pride thing. All of us — Timo Paepule, Micah Lau, Rustin Saole, Dane Porlas, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane — take pride. It rubs off on other players, like J.P. (Davis).” (HA)

Quotes from USCHO about the Warriors

September 21, 2007

About how UH has been improving, JJ said:
“We’re maturing as a football team. All of them have taken a lot of pride in their efforts. We’re 3-0 right now. We have to get better every week, and we have to play better this week to just keep inching along on what we want to do. We have to stay focused. If we can do that, we’ll get better.” (USCHO)

About taking CSU seriously, JJ said:
“We’re treating them just like Appalachian State against Michigan. It has been more difficult than we had hoped. They are similar to a lot of teams we play, and they run offensively similar to what Vegas did.” (USCHO)

About how they still have a lot of improvement to make, Bess said:
“Offensively, we’re not there yet. Defensively they’re not there yet, but you keep working harder week in and week out and you get better. Right now we have to work, and we can’t be thankful or grateful for anything. We just have to keep working hard and getting hungry.” (USCHO)

About being the #1 passing team in the US, RGM said:
“We definitely think that we deserve to be there. But we just have to keep working hard and improving.” (USCHO)

About their defensive improvement during their road trip, JJ said:
“I thought the overall scheme was settled and got going. I could see an attitude start to happen now. Hopefully we are going to start taking the ball away a little bit more. The only thing that we have fallen short, we have had a lot of chances and hands on the ball and we have not been coming down with them. The second we start coming down with (them) then it will snowball.” (USCHO)

About his injury and playing in the CSU game, Colt said:
“I’m not going to push it. No matter what, I’m going to take all the precautions in the world. No disrespect, but this is a I-AA football team, and if there is a week for (an injury) to happen it is this week for us. It lets the other guys step up this week in practice.” (USCHO)

About how they will work on improving themselves, Colt said:
“(It’s like coach Jones says), if we worry about ourselves we’ll be all right. So the next couple days we’re going to worry about ourselves, and Saturday we’ll just worry about ourselves and we’ll be fine.” (USCHO)

Quotes about Jesse Williams

September 21, 2007

Asked what it was about Hawaii that made him want to commit to UH, Jesse said:
“The main reason is that our first connection to UH was through Coach Miano and the fact that he took the time to talk to me and evaluate me meant a lot to our family. Also being of Torres Strait Island descent culturally Hawaii is a great option for me.” (Warrior Insider)

Asked what coach Miano said when he gave his commimtment, Jesse said:
“He said that it was great news and that he would inform Coach Jones.” (WI)

Asked when he thinks he’ll get to Hawaii, Jesse said:
“All depending on the academics, but we are hoping for January if not August 2008.” (WI)

Asked if he has a written or verbal offer from UH, Jesse said:
“So far only a verbal but I think that is because my visit coincided with the start of the season and things were a bit hectic for everyone.” (WI)

Asked if he had anything to say to Warrior fans, Jesse said:
“Just like to thank Hawaii for this great opportunity, and I will do my best to uphold the Warrior name on and off the field.” (WI)

Random Warrior Quotes

September 21, 2007

About practicing at right wideout after being the #2 left wideout (behind Rivers), Greg Salas said:
“It’s cool. It’s not really a big difference.” (HA)

About looking forward to playing 2 of his former high school teammates (all 3 were DBs) David Misher and Jon Carmon, Ryan Perry said:
“Misher knew about this game before we did. He said, ‘Dude, we’re going out there to play you all.’ ” (HA)

About how Blaze could play vs. CSU, JJ said:
“He still has some apprehension, but I think he’ll probably play.” (HSB)

About Salas being behind Lane at backup for both wideout spots, WR coach Ron Lee said:
“Greg is just a redshirt freshman and has a bright future. Right now he has some good players ahead of him.” (HSB)
